The streak lives
I don't know why I feel like I have to keep this tradition going every year, but I do. Even when I was a brand-new mommy with a two-week-old baby who just happened to be born during blackberry season, I took her out in the August heat and picked blackberries for a pie.
My family has never had any objections to my summertime compulsion to make blackberry pie. As far as compulsions go, it's not a bad one. I'm doing my best to pass it on to the next generation.

Yesterday after lunch the girls and I braved the sweltering heat to go picking, all for the love of blackberries. Why don't I ever plan ahead and go berry picking first thing in the morning? I picked just enough for a pie, while Lucy sat in the stroller, placated by berries I frequently handed her. Beth played nearby and occasionally helped me pick. If stuffing herself full of all the berries she can reach can be called helpful.

This morning Beth and I baked this lovely pie, and we'll be enjoying it after dinner tonight. And now summer can be over if it wants to be.

Yum.
What a wonderful tradition to pass on to your girls! Just imagine Beth, someday, showing these pictures to her daughter as they make their own blackberry pies. So sweet.
Everything about this tradition is wonderful-the time spent with mom, actually picking fruit and then making it into something, the smells of pie baking...
Jen, I commend your effort to keep the tradition going! I feel the same way sometimes when I am baking and decorating a birthday cake for my kids when everyone else just makes cupcakes... :) "why do I feel I need to do this?" It was a great tradition that my mom passed down and we loved it as kids! I am sure your girls will love remembering your once-a-summer picking and baking.. and you're welcome to send a pie my way. :)
